More than 500 hours (thank you Kirk!!!) have gone into renovations so far, using reclaimed and re-purposed materials for most of the work. Our butcher block counter is made from reclaimed rough-cut cherry, poplar, and sycamore bought at Community Forklift; two old barn doors have been used to create a partition; old grain bins from a general store line the front hallway; and two retail display cases came to us from New to You in Falls Church, VA.

Stop by and see us soon! We’ll be featuring locally grown produce from Sweet Rose Farm and others, local meats and dairy products including organic milk in glass bottles, Bigg Riggs West Virginia products, the BEST handmade charcuterie from Jamie Stachowski, and so much more from local farms and producers!

We’ll also be featuring visits from local farmers and chefs, classes, and meetings for locavores and foodies. Get ready Vienna!

Truffle popcorn is here…and it is sooo good

June 6th, 2009

We are excited to offer another new product! This is definitely not chocolate. This air-popped popcorn is made from the finest white corn and sprinkled with white truffles and Black Perigord Truffles, the delicious and expensive French Truffle.

Christened by Brillat Savarin as the “black diamond of the kitchen,” truffles are an elite and elusive epicurean delight, retailing for up to $1500 a lb! Why are these mushrooms so expensive you probably want to know, and especially if you don’t even care for mushrooms. Here’s a brief look into the history of this elusive and delectable epicurean delight.

Reports of Truffle collections date back as early as 4,000 years ago. The history of these extravagant tubers, inducers of romance and a top measure of haute cuisine, began when the ancients attributed them with magical power. According to Plutarch’s legend, it was believed that truffles were created by the gods, born as lightning bolts struck the earth. They grow underground at the roots of trees and are worshiped by chefs and epicureans around the world.

So treat yourself to this mouth watering aphrodisiac called the truffle – one of the most expensive foods in the world.

Stop by On the Gourmet this weekend to taste this delicious treat. Our 3 oz bag is only $10.00. Affordable luxury!
